The Stories you have just read from these outstanding athletes include a time in their lives when they not only realized their need to know God, but the possibility of walking in harmony with Him on a daily basis. Perhaps you're at a similar juncture…wanting to move from passive indifference to genuine trust in Him regarding all that matters. A relationship with God begins this way:
First–Know and believe that God loves you and created you to know Him personally. Thank God for His love and plan for your life. John 17:3 says, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.” Jesus said, “…I came that they might have life, and might have it abundantly.” (John 10:10) The abundant life consists of peace, purpose and fulfillment based on a reconciled relationship with God.
Second–Understand that we are separated from God and cannot know Him or experience His plan for our lives because of our sin. The Bible tells us, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom.3:23) and if we die apart from Him we will be separated from Him for eternity. “For the wages of sin is death…" (6:23)
Third–Rely on Jesus Christ, who died in our place, paying the penalty for our sin, providing the forgiveness we need and the only way to enter into a personal relationship with God and have eternal life in heaven.
“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) Christ speaking: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.” (John 14:6)
Fourth–Receive Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord by inviting Him in and accepting, as a free gift, His death on the cross as payment for your sins.
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12) Ephesians 2:8-9 reads, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.”
If you’d like to begin a journey with a loving God who wants to be with you forever, I invite you to pray the following prayer in the sincerity of your heart.
Dear God, I need You. I acknowledge that I have been living my life apart from Your perfect plan and purpose for me. Thank You for sending Your Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for man’s sin. I now want to enter into a personal relationship with You by accepting Christ’s death on the cross as payment for my own sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as my Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving me of all my sins. Take control of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be. It’s in the name of Jesus that I pray this
prayer. Amen.
Here are some of the results of placing your faith in Jesus Christ: 1. Christ comes into your life. (Colossians 1:27) 2. Your sins are forgiven. (Colossians 1:14) 3. You become a child of God. (John 1:12) 4. You receive eternal life. (John 5:24) 5. You have the power to pursue intimacy with God. (Romans 5:5) 6. You begin the great adventure for which God created you. (John 10:10 and 2 Corinthians 5:17)
